Scholarship Application :(
Hi!! I was recently completing my Loran Scholarship application and the portion that asks which university you want to attend says individuals chosen as Loran Scholars are expected to leave their home region???? I was planning to go to the university in my city but if I were to win this scholarship would I have to go somewhere else?? I understand there are different loran awards (some win $80000 and some win a couple thousand for being a finalist) so would I become ineligible to win any awards?

Schulich Award
I was going to apply for the Schulich scholarship however I noticed that the eligibility says that students cannot be going into medicine or medical research. I am not sure what I will be going into after my science degree however I wanted to keep my options open. I read some articles about past winners and some of them said that they want to pursue medicine. If someone ended up pursuing medicine after would they revoke the award?

Horatio Alger Scholarship
Does anyone know what is on the horatio alger support form? Its to be completed by someone over the age of 21 and it says that this person should verify your adversity. I was wondering what else is on it such as reference or questions about who I am as a person? I was thinking of getting my assostant principal to do it for me since I have talked to her about my circumstances however if it contains any other questions about what i am like, my involvement, and my character, she might not be the best to fill it out for me because she does not know all of it.

Loran Scholarship Application
Hi everyone. I'm applying to be a 2019 Loran scholar and on previous applications I have seen a question that says list 5 of your accomplishments. What do they mean by this question???
Also there is a section for artist/musical pursuits and I dont have anything for that (I do photography but I would put that under school for yearbook)

We also have to write short essays and I was wondering what would be the best way to write it in terms of format? Like, is a story type of essay good or a well structured formal essay??

All advice is greatly appreciated!

High School Class of 2018 Offers of Admission
Now that school's back in full force and university applications are open, I thought I'd make this application thread so that people can see when people get accepted, where they applied, their averages, etc.

In your post, please include the following:
- Program and post-secondary institution
- Date of application
- Date of offer
- Admission average (Grade 11, Grade 12 first semester- basically whatever was used in determining admission qualifications)
- Province you're applying from
- Any other information you'd like to add

Good luck everyone!!

Scholarship Requirements
I want to apply to some scholarships next year and was wondering how good my chances would be if I don't play any sports and barely do any art/music. The only kind of relates thing I do is photography because I enjoy it. I have never had a talent for sports which is why I don't play, also the team's at my school are really competitive. I going into grade 12 by the way and am interested in applying to things like Loran. How much will my involvement matter???? I was looking at a 2015 application and there was a big section on listing athletics and music/art involvement. Any advice would be appreciated :)

Laptop for University
Hey guys, I need an upgrade for a new laptop for next year. I am looking particularly at those that are 2 in 1 that can be a sturdy laptop for writing essays and etc. but also one that I can write on for chemistry notes for example (one that comes with a compatible pen would be preferable). A lot of my friends are getting a mac laptop and an ipad that they can write on but I was thinking if there is a 2 in 1 computer that could do both it could be more efficient and potentially cheaper. I want to switch all of my notes to electronic ones and for example in calc/chem it would be difficult to type and in my opinion it would be easier to write the equations and math. I am going into BMSc (Medical Science) and my courses for next year would be chem, physics, bio, calc, and probably music and a language as an elective. With that in mind, please leave all your suggestions and recommendations bellow and even a warning on what not to get. I would really appreciate it!!!

Changed my mind?
Hey guys, I need some advice from people who went or are going through the same thing as me.

I have applied to various business programs at schools in Canada, but I have had a sudden change in heart and I want to pursue something else. I am thinking of some Health Science programs but I have never taken a biology course, so I have a couple of questions.

1. Do you have any career counsellors that you would recommend?
2. Do you know how I could pursue Health Science within University without taking biology in high school? Are there any introduction courses I can take in my first year before switching my major?
3. Is it easy to transfer within faculties in a given university?
4. Has anyone been through the same thing? Is there someone who can possibly guide me through this?

Oh, additional comment! The reason I have changed my mind about taking Business within university is that I am currently studying for my IB exams and I realize how much I do not enjoy studying both Business Management and Economics. I have felt like this throughout the courses, but I thought it might just be me not enjoying the teaching style or something. I guess I was trying to play with my mind. I have contacted a career counsellor but I was wondering if anyone had one that was particularly good.

Should I take IB?
Hi,

So I took partial IB for grade 11 and am thinking of dropping it all in grade 12. I also want to apply to some scholarships next year. I was wondering if academic courses had anything to do with my chances of winning, especially for big scholarships like Loran?

What does it take to win a scholarship
I'm currently in high school right now (going to grade 12 next year) and it would really help me and my family if I won a couple scholarships going into university. I've been pretty involved within my community and school (volunteering, pursuing my interests, creating initiatives). I recently looked at different scholarships and they seem quite competitive to get. I know a few people who have won big scholarships in the past (Loran) and some people who are planning to in the future. What are they looking for in an applicant? What chance do I have of getting them?

Thanks for reading this :)

Scholarships
Hey, so I'm going to be in grade 12 next year and am thinking of applying to some scholarships next year. I am in partial IB this year but have decided to drop it all for next year. Would this affect my chances of getting scholarships such as Loran or others????

Learning Languages
Hello,

I am a high school student right now (grade 11) and am really interested in learning languages. Currently, I know 4 fluently (because of my diverse background) including english and I am hoping to add French and Arabic to the list. I have been learning french in school since grade 4 and can say that now I am decent at reading and writing it but terrible at oral skills. I get completely lost when people are speaking it because they sound nothing like to what I am used to hearing. As for Arabic, I know very basic things and can read it all from a very early age. I just wanted to hear all your experiences with language learning and see what tips you all have for becoming fluent in these two languages

Thanks!

Early Admissions Application
I'm currently a Ontario student in grade 12 and I'm really confused about early admissions. My grade 11 average was a 86% for 8 courses but my top six is 90%. However my top six don't include two of my pre recs for engineering. My guidance counsellor even told me those marks were too low for early admission but I've seen people already get accepted this early with about the same averages. Are my marks too low? Especially cause i want to get into engineering or architecture. And when applying for early admissions do they take your six courses and do they have to be your pre recs or can they just be your top six?

Starting a Key Club
Hi everyone. I am a high school student and I want to start a Key Club at my school for the upcoming school year. We do have some service clubs at my school but they do not do much. I have been doing research for starting the club but could not find out all the information I needed. So, if anyone has been previously involved in one or knows about Key Club, I would appreciate it if you could answer a couple questions for me :)
 1. What does it mean to charter a club and how is it done?
 2. Would it cost student members anything to be a part of the club?
3. How do I make it a part of Key Club International?
4. How do I get the club to be sponsored to be sponsored by the local Kiwanis club?
5. Is it possible for a student to start the club?

I might have more questions later but just these for now. I would love some help to clear some of my confusion.

Youth Groups
Hello. I am a high school student and was wondering if there were any ways for youth to get involved with human rights NGOS such as UNESCO or UNICEF by means other than volunteering? Are there any youth council, conference, or ambassador opportunities?

Thanks in advance

Is UBCO a good school to prepare for the Phd Programs?
I am from Toronto, Ontario and I have accepted by UBCO (Bsc) and UManitoba (Bsc).

Now I just found out UBCO does not offer some significant courses that may help me to get admitted to PhD programs, like functional analysis, group theory and time series analysis etc.
While Umanitoba offers wide range courses( as far as I know, Umanitoba's third year's math courses even a little bit more than UBCO's total math courses, and UBCO only offers 5 statistic courses this year)

So can you guys please give me some advice that should I choose UBCO or Umanitoba? Or I need to wait for a year then applying for those universities in Ontario(I did not apply for them this year)?

Please and Thank you!

And sorry I did not find UBCO tag...

Queen's University or University of Manitoba?
I'm planning to go into medicine and I got accepted to Queen's with a large scholarship. Now the cost to attend Queen's or stay in my own province (Manitoba) are the same. Is it worth it to go to Queen's for undergrad? Does it really matter where you go for undergrad? Plus I already have connections in Manitoba for ECs, volunteering and stuff. Apparently Queen's is super competitive. WWYD?

ASK ME ANYTHING - Finished First Year - U of Manitoba, BBA, Actuarial Mathematics Major
Hello,
I just finished my first year. I am studying business at the University of Manitoba, but I also was accepted to McGill(science and business) but due to my actuarial major, I turned down McGill for what I believed to be a more structured major(McGill seemed to have poor resources and few actuarial classes). McGill is recognized on the SOA(society of actuaries) but not on the CIA (Canadian Institute of Actuaries, http://www.cia-ica.ca/about-us/actuaries/careers/universities). Essentially my choice to the U of M was entirely up to me.

I've already taken 12 courses (two classes ahead), and I have a 3.83 GPA. As well, I have taken month classes, and have an idea how university runs.
I also went to an immersion high school and switched to full english university.

I think that I might have some informational insight about choosing the university programs, as well as BBA/BComm help/knowledge. I can also try and help other math or business majors(or classes), or speak about the actuary plan.

Thanks and good luck to everyone on their studies!!!
